Adi naa yaparaadhamu (అది నా యపరాధము) is an adhyatma (spiritual) keerthana by the 15th-century composer-saint Annamacharya (Annamayya), set in raga Malavi and addressed to Lord Sri Venkateswara of Tirumala. In every verse the poet humbly names a "fault" (aparaadha) of his own: not seeing that every form is the Lord's form, treating the all-complete Lord as limited, serving him without contemplating him in the heart, praising him without knowing his greatness, and searching everywhere for the one who stands right before his eyes. The song's themes of the Lord pervading all forms and dwelling within as the inner Self are close to the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita, and TTD places this audio in its Annamayya Bhagavadgeetha collection. Below you will find the lyrics in Telugu, an easy-to-read English transliteration, word notes, and the meaning in English and Telugu.

Word notes

  • Aparaadhamu (అపరాధము): fault, offence, wrong.
  • Adiyu nidiyu (అదియు నిదియు): that and this; every one of them.
  • Neraya (నెరయ): fully, everywhere.
  • Roopamulu (రూపములు): forms.
  • Nee roopamu (నీ రూపము): your form.
  • Narayuta (అరయుట): to see, to understand, to perceive.
  • Paripoornudu (పరిపూర్ణుఁడు): the all-complete one; one who lacks nothing.
  • Parichchinnudu (పరిచ్ఛిన్నుఁడు): one who is limited, bounded, measurable.

Meaning of Adi naa yaparaadhamu (in English)

This is a summary of the idea of the song, not a word-for-word translation. The poet makes a humble confession in every verse; the faults he names are the faults of any seeker.

  • Pallavi: This is my fault, and this is my fault. That and this too, all of them are my fault.
  • First charanam: All forms everywhere are only your form, and not realising it is my fault. You are the all-complete one, and looking upon you as limited is my fault.
  • Second charanam: Thinking of you as no more than an individual soul is, in that respect, my fault. Serving you and yet not contemplating you in the heart is, further, my fault.
  • Third charanam: O Venkatesa, praising you without knowing your incomparable greatness is my fault. Wherever I look you stand right before my eyes, and searching for you here and there is my fault.

The song reads as a quiet lesson in humility: the Lord is complete, present in every form and in the heart, so the seeker's real difficulty is failing to see what is already there. It should be read as spiritual guidance, not as a judgement of any person.
