anurāgamu1 lēni manasuna sujñānamu rādu
To that person’s mind, which has no divine love (towards the Lord), true knowledge will not be attainable.

Only such great personages, who are inward looking, have this (real) knowledge; otherwise, to that person’s mind which has no divine love, real knowledge will not be attainable.

vaga vagagā bhujiyiñcē vāriki tṛptiyau rīti
saguṇa dhyānamu4 paini saukhyamu tyāgarāja nuta
In the same manner as satiation is experienced by those who taste varieties of food items, so is the comfort (experienced) in meditating on Lord with form, O One praised by Thyagaraja!

  • 1anurāgamu - Couplets of Narada Bhakti Sutras 2 - 6, 51 and 55:
    “That (Divine Love) is of the nature of supreme Love of God.(2) And in its own intrinsic nature, Divine Love is nothing less than the immortal bliss of freedom (mukti) itself, which comes unsolicited by the grace of God and by self-sacrifice.(3) Gaining that, man realises his perfection and divinity and becomes thoroughly contended.(4) Realising that, man becomes intoxicated and fascinated, as it were, because he is completely immersed in the enjoyment of the bliss of the Atman, the truest and highest self.(6) The intrinsic nature of love is incapable of being described precisely.(51) Attaining that (prēma svarūpa – intrinsic nature of Love) one sees and hears only that and thinks only that.”(55) (Translation by Swami Tyagaisananda)
    • Ramakrishna Paramahamsa illustrates ‘single minded love’ (anurāga) through a story about Hanuman. “Once Hanuman came to Dwaraka and wanted to see Sita and Rama. Krishna said to Rukmini, His queen, ‘You had better assume the form of Sita; otherwise there will be no escape from the hands of Hanuman'” (because Rama and Sita were Hanuman’s chosen ideals).
  • 3eruka – Same as ‘sujñāna’ given in Pallavi.
  • 4saguṇa dhyānamu paini saukhyamu – The satiation experienced by the one who tasted varieties of food items cannot be expressed; so also the comfort derived from the meditation on the Lord with form (qualities) cannot be expressed. It is only to be experienced. Please see Narada Bhakti Sutra - SlOka 4 – ‘tṛptō bhavati’ (contended) – and Sloka 51 - ‘anirvacanīyam’ – (not possible to describe).

Commentary

  • 1janakajā mātavai – ‘You are patient like Earth’ - This can be taken in two senses – (1) You are very patient; therefore forbear my faults (positive sense) and (2) You are too patient bordering insensitivity because You do not take note of my pleadings (negative sense). The latter seems to be more appropriate in view of the wordings of anupallavi where Sri Thyagaraja states that the Lord is not protecting.

Part I

  2. Vasudevayani (Kalyani): Visit of dvāra pāla to the assembly.
  3. dvārapāla questions the sūtradhāri (of the nāṭakam); the sūtradhāri explains the purpose of the nāṭakam.
  4. On questioning by sūtradhāri, dvārapāla tells that varuṇa (Lord of Oceans) has ordered the town to be beautified for greeting Prahlada who has been saved by samudrarāja.
  5. Sagarundu vedalenido (Yamuna Kalyani): Visit of samudrarāja.
  6. Vinata Suta Rara (Huseni): samudrarāja calls on garuḍa to release Prahlada from nāgapāśam.

  6. After paying obeisance to sage Narada, Prahlada tells his anguish. The sage tells him about the conversation he heard at vaikuṇṭham and that the Lord is aware of Prahlada's bhakti.
  7. Ipudaina nanu (Arabhi): Hearing the sweet words, Prahlada feels happy.
  8. Prahlada wants to know the details of conversation between Lord Hari and Mother Lakshmi. As the Lord explains the call of Prahlada, mother feels sad that the Lord leaves Her frequently and She feels sad that the Lord might remain at bhūlōka and not come back. Thus sage Narada explains that the Lord is very eager to come to Earth.

  3. Tanalone dhyaninchi (Deva gandHari): Prahlada explains what he wants - he want to be merged with the Lord forever.
  4. O Rama Rama sarvonnata (Nagagandhari): As the Lord further tests Prahlada, Prahlada says that he is not ready to accept any such deceits.
  5. Sri Rama Jaya Rama (Madhyamavati): As the Lord wants to leave, Prahlada pleads to him.
  6. Sarasiruha nayana (Bilahari): Prahlada sees atma jyoti and extols Lord.
  7. Vaddayundede (Varali): Prahlada asks Lord to remain with him always; Prahlada explains how he will keep the Lord happy.
  8. Tiruna na loni (Saveri): The Lord seats Prahlada in his lap and asks what he wants and Prahlada explains further.

  2. Andundakane (Kamavardhini): Lord says that he will go to vaikunṭham, meet Lakshmi and then come back. Prahlada suspects some trick again and he seeks promise from the Lord that He would return.
  3. Emani vegintune (Huseni): As the Lord departs, Prahlada becomes worried.
  4. Enta papinaitinemi (Gaulipantu): Further lamentation of Prahlada.
  5. O Jagannatha (Kedara gaula): Prahlada searches where the Lord could be. As he recollects the words of the Lord madbhaktāḥ yatra gayanti tatra tiṣṭhāmi nārada realising that the Lord is resident in the hearts of Bhagavatas, he prays to Lord.
  6. Chelimini jalajakshu (Yadukula kambhoji): As the Lord did not turn up, he looks at each and every one whom he sees and asks them to convey to the Lord his anguish.
  7. Pahi Kalyana Rama (Kapi): Lord Hari comes along with mother Lakshmi - Prahlada extols the Lord.
  8. Rara mayintidaka (Asaveri): As the Lord embraces Prahlada, he calls the Lord to his house.

4. I abandoned desire for women; uttering repeatedly that ‘the nectar of Your name is the true livelihood of this Kali Yuga’, all my worries have gone away.


5. If one asks as to what happened to the comforts of this World, (I shall respond that) they vanished like the wealth dreamt of; by extolling You and meditating on You, I understood Your grand Illusion.

6. I was enamoured beholding Your beauty; I was caught in the hands of inseparable supreme Love towards You; I saluted You dedicating to You my whole life.


7. O Lord Rama! Would it be possible even for Brahma – four headed - or Indra or Lord Siva – One who wears the digit of the moon - to describe all that one has thought of? No, words will fail.

8. Did You think of looking at me as an alien? otherwise, are You still hesitating to declare that 'I am blessed'? O Sun who dispels the darkness enveloping the most eminent devotees!

9. O Lord Rama! I have desisted from the quality of passion; I have vowed in my mind to chant Your names; I considered that all these to be the merits earned by Tyagaraja.

Commentary

  • This Kriti forms part of dance-drama 'Prahlada Bhakti Vijayam' . In this Kriti, Sri Tyagaraja depicts the feelings of Prahlada.
  • 6mūrdhanyulaina bhakta – this may be translated as 'most eminent devotees' or 'devotees who became most eminent'. From the preceding words 'anudhvānta, the latter version seems to be more appropriate because unless the veil of darkness is first lifted, one cannot become 'most eminent devotee'. However, it may also argued that even in the most eminent devotees, there is a trace of darkness which is to be ultimately lifted by the grace of Lord. O Spouse of Lakshmi! The human body that does not swim in the ocean of Supreme Bliss, called the knowledge of music on which all Vedas are dependent, is indeed a burden on the earth.

Commentary

  • * 2viśwanātha – name of Lord Siva at Kasi kshetra.
  • 3śrī kānta – In the anupallavi, the Lord is addressed as ‘śrī nāyaka’ – meaning Vishnu, in the Charana, Vishnu Himself is shown as part of Trinity. Therefore, the epithet ‘śrī nāyaka’ would indicate Narayana who is above the Trinity.

amma rāvamma tuḷasamma nanu pālimpa-
vamma satatamu padamulē namminānamma
O Mother Tulasi! Deign to come and protect me;
I have placed faith in only Your holy feet.

nemmadini nīviha parammulosaguduvanucu
kamma viltuni taṇḍri kalanaina bāyaḍaṭa (amma)
It is said that, because You grant comfort in this World and in the future World,
Lord Vishnu would not leave You even in His dreams.

nī mahatvamunu kani nīrajākṣi
tāmarasa daḷa nētru tyāgarājuni mitru

It is said that, beholding Your soft body, perceiving Your sweet fragrance
and knowing Your greatness, O Lotus Eyed!
The Lotus petal Eyed one, who is the benefactor of this Thyagaraja,
adorns You on his head with Love.
