  • 2 toṭlanūtuvu – gilluduvu - This is an adage to show one is busy – first make the child sleep by rocking the cradle; when the child starts sleeping, pinch it so that the child would cry and then rock the cradle - the cycle would go on. In Tamil this is called ‘kuzhandaiyaik kiḷḷi toṭṭilaiyāṭṭudal’.

1. Such a person alone is blessed, who, without retreating (from the aim), is ever dedicated to chanting the holy names of Lord, to the exultation of his mind.

2. He alone is blessed, who, like Tumburu (Gandharva chief of celestial musicians), dances in the Court of the Lord – the Ocean of mercy, attuned with his tambura.

3. He alone is blessed, who, without leaving the company of virtuous people for help, and himself remaining vigilant (against pitfalls), has spent his time happily.

4. He alone is blessed, who, having extinguished the afflictions of his mind, considering all (worldly enjoyments) to be false, remains talking sweetly (about the Lord).

5. He alone is blessed, who goes about without being involved in the six-fold internal enemies (kAma, krOdha, lObha, mOha, mada, mAtsarya) which screen one from understanding the real nature of the Lord – the saviour of Gajendra – the elephant.

6. He alone is blessed, who believes whole-heartedly the Lord Rama-incarnate, who is famed as the One who rids of all the griefs and cycle of re-birth.

7. He alone is blessed, who, having been born in actual Brahmana family (or caste) - which is indeed rare to attain - achieves the ever-lasting end-result called liberation.

8. Be he grounded in performance of Vedic actions or be he of virtuous (or charitable) disposition, he alone is blessed, who knows the secret of the joy of the name of Lord Sri Rama.

9. He alone is blessed, who is not ruined, because of desires, donning garbs for the sake of petty coins.

10. He alone is blessed, who sets his aim in the charming Lord Sri Rama, who has been worshipped well by all by chanting His names.

11. He alone is blessed whoever had earlier (or first) experienced the excellent comfort after this much of effort.

12. He alone is blessed, who, without himself joining the company of the people given to the quality of passion, believes in the resplendent Lord Sri Rama - praised by this Tyagaraja.

  • 2tāpamu – Three afflictions - ‘tri-tāpa’ - ‘tāpatraya’ – adhyātmika, ādhibhautika, ādhidaivika.
    • Also refer to Sri Lalita Sahasranama – ‘tāpa-trayāgni santapta samāhlādana candrikā’ (357) (moonlight that gives joy to those who are burnt by the triple fires of misery – those generated by physical, mental and supernatural causes)
  • 3sallāpamu – This word also means ‘conversing’. It is not clear whether Sri Tyagaraja means that the devotee should be talking sweetly to the Lord or about the Lord.
  • 4pravṛtti - Generally this means ‘action’ or ‘conduct’ ‘manifestation’ etc. In Srimad-Bhagavad-Gita, Chapter 16, the following verse is relevant –
  • pravṛttim ca nivṛttiṃ ca janā na vidurāsurāḥ ||
    na śaucam nāpi cācārō na satyaṃ tēṣu vidyatē
    || 7 ||

“The persons of Asurika nature know not what to do and what to refrain from; neither is purity found in them nor good conduct, not truth.”

  • However, in view of the previous word ‘mariyu’ (again) and following word ‘toalgiñcē’ (rid), Sri Tyagaraja seems mean – the ‘cycle of re-birth’. In the Kriti ‘entani nē varṇintu’ – rāga mukhāri, he praises Sabari as ‘punar-āvṛtti rahita padamu pondina’ – (who attained the state of non-return). Accordingly, it has been translated here.
  • 5vīsamulu – this may mean ‘one sixteenth part of anything’ or ‘a grain of gold equivalent in weight to a grain of rice’. However, if ‘kāsu vīsamulu’ is to be taken together, this may mean ‘aṇā’ – one-sixteenth part of a rupee (used before 1957). Here, this has been translated as ‘petty coins'.
  • 7sarvōnnatamau sukhamanubhaviñcukonna vāḍu – Sri Tyagaraja seems to refer to Anjaneya specifically.

Commentary

  • Thyagaraja mentions the instances in the Charanam as proofs of the greatness of Rama-bhakti.
  • 0"appa" (though it literally means father) is most likely in this context an exclamation of amazement, as in "Wow, Rama-bhakti is indeed very great!" It is similar to the Tamil expression aḍēṅgappā.
  • 2śabari eṅgiliccunā: 'eṅgili’ means leftover of eatables, defiled by contact with the mouth. (Tamil: eccil)
    • As per Valmiki Ramayana, Aranya Kanda, Chapter 74 (Rama meeting Sabari), there is no mention of Sabari offering bitten and tasted fruits.

  • 3candra-dharuḍu meccunā: The reference is to the phalaśruti of Vishnu Sahasranama where Parvathi asks Lord Siva the means for hearing the thousand(s of) names of Vishnu recited by the learned every day. The Lord Siva replies that simple repetition of the name of ‘Rama’ would be equal to reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama.
  • 4abala swayamprabhā - The story of Swayamprabha comes in the Kishkinda Kanda of Ramayana. During their search of Sita, Anjaneya and others reach a divine cave, where they find a wonderful city guarded by an aged ascetic woman by name Swayamprabha. She is daughter of Merusavarni and has been granted boons by Gods. However, Valmiki Ramayana doesn’t seem to contain any further reference about her emancipation in the hands of Sri Rama. This is found in Adhyatma Ramayana – Kishkinda Kanda – 6th Chapter.
  • 5kapi vāridhi dāṭunā – Before leaping over the ocean Anjaneya utters these words to the monkeys –
    "As an arrow loosed by Sri Rama would fly with the speed of wind, I too would likewise course to Lanka guarded by Ravana. If I don’t find Sita in Lanka, I shall certainly proceed with the same speed to heaven. If I don’t find Sita in heaven even after exerting myself, I shall bring Ravana, in chains. At all events I shall return successful with Sita" (Srimad Valmiki Ramayana, Sundara Kanda, Chapter 1, verses 38 – 42).
    • However, in spite of his best efforts he could not locate Sita – even though Asoka Vana, where Sita was kept as captive, was just in his sight. He becomes despondent and even contemplates of becoming an ascetic (ibid Chapter 13, verse 54). Then, drawing up courage, prays to Rama, Lakshmana and Sita and other Gods before venturing into Asoka Vana (ibid, verse 59). And, there, he finds Sita.
    • It is indeed strange that the grace of the very person who sent Anjaneya on this mission (Sri Rama) and the person searched (Sita) should be sought. Sri Thyagaraja enjoys this contradiction in the Krti 'rāma rāma nīvāramu gāmā’ – rāga ānanda bhairavi wherein he states - 'marugu jēsukonunaṭṭi mahima rārā’ – ‘O Lord who seems as if His Might is screened’. Sri Thyagaraja worshipped Sri Rama as Para Brahman.
    • The great Harikatha exponent Brahmasri T.S. Balakrishna Sastrigal explains (in his discourse on Thyagaraja Ramayana) the feat of leaping across the ocean as the effect of devotion of Anjaneya. But when the Bhakta develops ego and thus boastfulness, the job undertaken does not fructify. The boastful Anjaneya at the beginning of the journey understands his limits and hence prayer to Sri Rama and mother Sita for their grace – for searching Sita herself.
  • 6kaliki rōta kaṭṭunā - The episode in Krishnavatara where Yasoda ties Sri Krishna, as a child, to a mortar is mentioned here. Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 10, Chapter 9, verses 18 and 21 are relevant:
    “Perceiving the over-exertion of His mother, whose body was bathed in perspiration, the wreaths tied around his braid fallen down, Sri Krishna allowed himself to be bound by Himself out of (sheer) compassion.
    • Lord Krishna is not so easily accessible in this world to those identified with their body or even to men of wisdom who have become one with Him; but only to those possessed of devotion to Him.”
    • Please also refer to Krti of Papanasam Sivan – ‘Enna Thavam Saidanai Yasoda’ wherein he wonders at the fortune of a milk-maid who could tie the Supreme Lord to a mortar.

  • 1straiṇa janulu – ‘those who desire the company of (other) women’; therefore ‘belonging to women (straiṇa)’. It is not clear whether it means ‘womaniser’.
  • 2vīṇāḍitini – in Telugu, there does not seem to be any word ‘vīṇu’; it is probably the morphed form of the tamil word ‘vīṇ’ meaning ‘wasteful’, ‘useless’.

Alone and without anybody by thy side, thou shalt wander through diverse countries, O wretch, thou shalt have no place in the midst of men. The stench of pus and blood shall emanate from thee, and inaccessible forests and dreary moors shall be thy abode!   • 5pāṇḍava drōhi - The story relates to yudhiṣṭhira coming to the rescue of Duryodhana, Karna and their army when the latter were vanquished by Gandharvas in a battle at Dvaitavana where pāṇḍavas were staying during their exile. The story appears in Mahabharata – Book 3 – Vana Parva - GhoshaYatra Parva – Chapters 234 to 244. [Duryodhana]

Commentary

  • 6tīrpa lēnani – tīrpa lēdā. The traditional meaning – as contained in all the books – is that Sri Tyagaraja beseeches the Lord to relieve him of the problems created by his elder brother. Therefore 'tīrpa lēnani' is appropriate to derive such a meaning. On the other hand, 'tīrpa lēdā' would mean 'did you not relieve'. If 'tīrpa lēdā' is taken as correct, all the examples cited and also the Pallavi words 'anyāyamu sēyakurā' would be rendered meaningless.
