Meaning of Cheli neevu modalane (in English)
This is a summary of the idea of the song, not a word-for-word translation. A friend teases Alamelumanga lovingly and helps her compose herself. Every stanza ends with the happy refrain "nipudu" (now), as the long-awaited wishes of the heart are fulfilled.
- Pallavi: "Friend, you have always been a shy bride, yet see how openly your feelings show now!" The friend gently teases her.
- First charanam: She is asked to wipe the sweat from her cheeks, tidy her loosened hair knot and untangle her ornaments. Her heart's desires have now come true.
- Second charanam: She is asked to smooth her scattered curls and fasten the end of her sari firmly. The vow she observed has borne fruit many times over.
- Third charanam: She is asked to touch up the tilakam on her forehead. Lord Venkateswara has joyfully taken Alamelumanga as his own, and everything she wished for has now come together.
Annamayya wrote many shringara sankeertanas in which the loving bond between God and the devotee is expressed through the relationship of the Lord and his consort. The song should be read as devotion, not as a worldly story.
