Telugu lyrics

Word notes
- Gaddari (గద్దరి): a crafty, cunning person.
- Jeevudu (జీవుడు): the individual soul, the human being.
- Kaamadhenuvu (కామధేనువు): the divine wish-fulfilling cow; here, a symbol of the Lord's grace.
- Yeddu (ఎద్దు): a bull; milking a bull stands for a pointless effort that can never give milk.
- Nedi deragu (ఏది తెరగు): "what way is there? what remedy remains?", the refrain of the song.
- Matamaayamu (మటమాయము): trickery, deceit.
- Chedu (చేదు): bitter.
- Naalu (నాలు): wife.
- Paraseva (పరసేవ): serving others, here meaning serving anything other than the Lord.
Meaning of Gaddari jivudu (in English)
This is a summary of the idea of the song, not a word-for-word translation. Annamayya holds up a mirror to the human mind. Every stanza ends with the same sorrowful question, "nedi deragu?" (what way is left?), asking what good can come from turning away from God.
- Pallavi: The clever human being leaves the Kamadhenu, the cow that gives everything, and sits down to milk a bull. Giving up the Lord's grace for futile worldly effort cannot bear fruit.
- First charanam: Through tricks and deceit, the mind itself grows restless and wanders in every direction. When even the ruler of the town keeps company with thieves, no action leads to a good end.
- Second charanam: The sinful mind starts telling lies and drives truth out of the house. The very mouth turns to bitter things. When this happens to everyone, what hope remains?
- Third charanam: Leaving the sweet Lord Venkateswara and agreeing to serve others, the mind has no direction. It is like a wife who leaves her loving husband and wanders aimlessly. Wherever she goes, there is no way out.
Annamayya often spoke to people directly in this way, gently warning that real peace comes only from surrender to the Lord. The song should be read as a spiritual reminder, not as a criticism of any person.
