Hari nive sakalalokaradhyudavu (హరి నీవే సకలలోకారాధ్యుఁడవు గాక) is an adhyatma (spiritual) keerthana by the 15th-century composer-saint Annamacharya (Annamayya), set in raga Suddhavasantam. The key word of the song is chalunu, "it is enough". Hari, you are the one worshipped by all the worlds, and the poet says that the single thought "I take refuge in you" is enough. In each verse he gives a reason. You remove the harm I did in the past, so what more is there to ask? You are my support within, so what independence do I have? You give the riches of this world and the next, so why should I look anywhere else? The song ends with Sri Venkatesa, who is everything in abundance, and the poet's simple claim that he is his servant. The audio here is sung by Nukala Chinna Satyanarayana. TTD places it in the album Annamayya Hari Nigamam. Below you will find the lyrics in Telugu, an easy-to-read English transliteration, word notes, and the meaning in English and Telugu.

Word notes

  • Hari (హరి): Vishnu, here Sri Venkateswara.
  • Sakalaloka-aradhyudu (సకలలోకారాధ్యుఁడు): the one worshipped by all the worlds.
  • Gaka (గాక): "indeed", "is it not so". It is a way of stating a fact the listener already accepts.
  • Dhara (ధర): the earth.
  • Saranamti (శరణంటీ): I say "refuge", I have taken refuge.
  • Talapu (తలఁపు): a thought, an intention.
  • Chalunu (చాలును): it is enough, it suffices. This is the key word of the song.
  • Kindi (కింది): earlier, in the past (literally "below").
  • Kidu (కీడు): harm, evil, ill effect.
  • Vapaganu (వాపఁగాను): since you remove or cure.
  • Andumeedu (అందుమీఁదు): beyond that, anything further.
  • Nadigeda (నడిగేదా): shall I ask?
  • Chalaka (చాలక): is it not enough? (a question).
  • Pondi puttinchetti (పొంది పుట్టించేట్టి): the one who brings beings to birth by joining them (with their bodies). The phrase is old Telugu, so this is one reading.
  • Brahmaputrudu (బ్రహ్మపుత్రుఁడు): read here as Brahma the creator, who is regarded as the son (born from the lotus of Vishnu's navel). The word has more than one reading, so this is tentative.
  • Indarigolicheda (ఇందరిఁగొలిచేదా): shall I serve all these others?
  • Kulatanamu (కూళతనము): foolishness, meanness.
  • Dikoni (దీకొని): with determination, with resolve.
  • Dikkai (దిక్కై): as the support, as the refuge.
  • Svatantramu (స్వతంత్రము): independence, freedom to act by oneself.
  • Kaikoni (కైకొని): having taken in, having accepted.
  • Lokamulu (లోకములు): the worlds.
  • Kadupu (కడుపు): belly. In the song it recalls the worlds resting within the Lord.
  • Nera (నేరము): a fault, an offence.
  • Iha-paramu (ఇహపరము): this world and the next.
  • Sirulu (సిరులు): riches, prosperity.
  • Sahajana (సహజాన): naturally, without effort.
  • Vihitamaina (విహితమైన): proper, ordained, fitting.
  • Sri Venkatesa (శ్రీవేంకటేశ): Sri Venkateswara.
  • Okkandave (ఒక్కండవే): you alone, you are the one.
  • Bahalamu (బహళము): abundant, plentiful.
  • Bantu (బంటు): a servant, a soldier of the Lord.

Meaning of Hari nive sakalalokaradhyudavu (in English)

This is a summary of the idea of the song, not a word-for-word translation. A few phrases (especially in the second verse) are old Telugu and can be read in more than one way, so please treat this as one reading.

  • Pallavi: Hari, you are the one worshipped by all the worlds. On this earth I have taken refuge in you. This one thought is enough.
  • First charanam: You remove the harm I did before. What more is there to ask beyond that? Is that not enough? Brahma the creator, who brings beings to birth, is your own. So should I serve all these others? What a foolishness that would be.
  • Second charanam: With determination you are the support within me. Do I have any independence of my own? Is that not enough? All the worlds are held in your belly. Are there others beyond you? To think so is only a fault.
  • Third charanam: When you yourself give all the riches of this world and the next, shall I not simply stay content? Is this not enough? O Sri Venkatesa, you alone are right and abundant, and I only say that I am your servant.

The song is a short argument for contentment. Annamayya asks the same question in each verse, "is this not enough?", and answers it each time. The Lord already forgives, supports and provides, so there is nothing to seek elsewhere. The last line is a quiet one. After all the reasons, the poet claims only the name "servant" (banta).
